Locally known as “mt. masaba” a name of the founding ancestor of the Bagisu who assumed to have emerged from the cave of its slopes several centuries ago. The Masaba’s spirit is believed to be embodied by Jackson’s Summit but maybe the taller Kiongo peak. Mt. Elgon is located on the Uganda-Kenya border only about 250 km from Kampala. It is also the oldest and largest solitary, a volcanic mountain in East Africa with the largest volcanic base in the whole world. It is a vast form, 80km in diameter, rises more than 3,000m above the surrounding plains.
